1. The Client Brief: Outfitting the Future Artists of Manchester
When The Manchester College set out to equip their new Visual Arts facility, Lead Visual Arts Technician Michael and the estates team faced a distinct challenge. Standard off-the-shelf tables simply couldn't meet the rigorous demands of a modern art studio.
They needed multi-functional, mobile workbenches that could:

Seat 6 Students Comfortably: Require an overhang lip (25–30 cm) around all four sides so students could sit with comfortable knee clearance.

Store Large Artwork: Accommodate standard UK A1 art portfolios (59.4cm x 84.1cm) both vertically and horizontally.

Withstand Heavy Daily Use: Offer moisture resistance for wet art media (paints, clays, printmaking) while supporting high weight loads.

Reconfigure Effortlessly: Feature heavy-duty, lockable castor wheels so instructors could rapidly open up studio floors for exhibitions and large-scale projects.

2. Design & Engineering: From Custom Sketches to Wisbech Workshop
Our design team worked closely with the college technicians to engineer three unique workbench variations tailored to different art disciplines:

Variation 1 (Horizontal Paper Storage): Engineered with wide, equally-spaced horizontal shelving designed specifically to store flat sheets of A1 paper and large artwork.

Variation 2 (Drawer & Storage Unit): Fitted with large equal-depth drawers accessible from both sides for paints, printmaking tools, and heavy studio equipment.

Variation 3 (Vertical Portfolio Divider Unit): Featuring parallel vertical slots spaced at 5 cm intervals alongside half-double shelving—allowing students to slide in A1 portfolio binders safely without bending or damaging their work.
All units were built with solid timber frames, 18mm moisture-resistant tops, and industrial-grade braked castor wheels for total stability during intensive carving, cutting, or printing sessions.

3. Weekend Installation Blitz: Zero Teaching Disruption
Manufacturing 53 massive 6ft x 4ft workbenches in our Wisbech facility was only half the job—the real logistical test was getting them into a busy city-centre campus without disrupting classes.
Working hand-in-hand with the college’s facilities and estates strategy teams:

Friday Evening Logistics: Our fleet delivered all pre-machined timber components directly to the loading bay before the campus closed at 4:30 PM.

48-Hour Assembly Marathon: Over Saturday and Sunday, our expert installation team worked 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM both days), assembling all 53 workbenches directly inside the 3rd-floor art studios using impact drivers.

Monday Morning Ready: When art students arrived on Monday morning, their studio was fully transformed with 53 heavy-duty, mobile workstations ready for action.
